Matho Monastery

Matho monastery belongs to the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Matho monastery dwells in the village of Matho and is located 26 kilometers away from Leh town. Matho monastery stands peacefully on a hill top with the picturesque sight of Matho village and Indus valley. Lama Dugpa Dorje founded Matho monastery in the year 1410.

This monastery belongs to the Sakya order. A huge collection of Buddhist Thangkas can be found in Matho monastery. It dates back to the 14th century and its background history will leave you spellbound. The architecture and features of Matho monastery resemble that of a Tibetan style. Matho monastery comprises of a Dukhang or the assembly hall.

Images of Sakya Pandita and other Sakya lamas are present in a small chapel that is pin pointed on the top storey. In order to fulfill your curiosity, you can also notice a museum just in the corner. The best time to visit Matho is from June to September. However, Matho Nagrang Festival can me a treat to your eyes and it is is celebrated in the month of March.
