Takthok monastery

Takthok monastery is the pearl of Shakti village and is located around 46 kilometers from Leh town. When you don’t understand about the direction, the villagers can help you figure out. This monastery belongs to Nying-ma-pa sect or red hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Since all the roof and wall are manufactured of rocks, the villagers named the monastery as ‘Takthok’ which can be translatedas ‘rock roof’.

It is amusing to learn that during the 8th century, these caves are believed to have been used for meditation by Padmasambhava. The assembly hall constitutes the statues of Maitreya, Padmasambhava and DorjeTakposal. For the Buddhist who worships the Buddhas, there is a cave known as Duphug Lhakhang and it is the most popular pilgrimage site.
